Abstract: |
Struggling readers are a major concern in Philippine public basic elementary education, with national data indicating that over half of Grade 1 to 3 pupils are below the expected level of reading. This qualitative case study explored how the Grade 2-4 teachers at Lurugan Elementary School in Valencia City assisted the struggling readers in the 2025-2016 school year. Eight teachers reported their experiences using open-ended questionnaires, identifying a number of effective strategies. They discovered that individualized instruction, frequent one-on-one or small group reading activities, and the use of more basic texts and visual aids were most important in assisting students. Confidence and motivation in students were also highlighted, with teachers relying on positive reinforcement and a positive classroom environment. Shared methods involved scaffolded and multisensory methods, including the use of phonics-based teaching, peer tutoring, and comprehension strategies such as questioning and summarizing. Family involvement became an essential element, which supported the enhancement of reading proficiency outside the class environment. Teachers demonstrated exceptional flexibility despite their obstacles in terms of poor resources and huge class sizes by adapting the interventions in a manner that addressed individual students' requirements. The research emphasizes the importance of individualized, multisensory, and affectively supportive instruction in enhancing literacy levels. Such results can inform teacher education, resource allocation, and policy-making efforts to enhance reading ability in public schools across the Philippines. |
