Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between family background and academic performance of learners in some twelve years basic education schools of Rwamagana district in the eastern province, Rwanda. In future, family is the first and primary foundation of the child learning process. By the way, the quality of education depends on the family background through parents’ involvement in the education process and providing all necessary material for their students’ learning. So, the study was conducted under four guiding research objectives which are to establish the relationship between family size and learners’ academic performance, assess the relationship between family financial status and learners’ academic performance, investigate the relationship between parental marital status and learners’ academic performance, and also examine the relationship between parents’ education level and learners’ academic performance. The study adopted a correlation research design to answer some research questions of the study while it covered sample of 95 participants’ respondents obtained by using solvin’ s formula. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, documentary review and observation. Hence, the study revealed that family background such as family size, family financial status, parental marital status and parents’ education level has a greater influence on learners’ academic performance. The study suggests that families are advised to marry lawfully and also, religious groups are urged to contribute much more to family stability in order to enhance the stability of families’ environment. In addition to this, community leaders and others partners may come in to regulate family contribution that can help different schools to enhance their learners’ academic performance.
