Abstract: The best examples of the mirror of literary society are found in modern Sanskrit literature. Former professor Dr. Rita Chattopadhyay, Department of Sanskrit, Jadavpur University, in her book ‘Ādhunika Saṃskṛta Sāhitya’ has called modern Sanskrit literature as the ‘mirror of time.’ Apart from mythological, fictional and historical stories, modern Sanskrit writers have given more space to the social sufferings of recent times in their works. Modern Sanskrit literature has undergone radical changes not only in story-telling but also in words, language and style of writing. Modern Sanskrit literature has largely abandoned the long, complex, compound words of ancient and medieval times and adopted a simple, fluent language. Modern Sanskrit writers have greatly enriched the Sanskrit vocabulary by introducing words from Bengali, Deśi, Arabic, French, and English etc. In this case, it deserves special mention – the number of books written in 20th century is about two and a half thousand. The contemporary Sanskrit poets of this period instilled the spirit of realism by portraying social evils like dowry, bribery, corruption, unemployment etc. in their writings. There are some realities of the society, which are not found in history and certified documents, they find place in literature. As a result, recent literature in Sanskrit language is closer to society and more sensitive to society. And the main focus of this article is to present the aspect of social consciousness in modern Sanskrit drama of the 20th century.
