Abstract: |
This research investigates the implementation of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in secondary schools, focusing on the challenges faced by teachers in utilizing this approach for teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL). CLT emphasizes communication as the core of language learning, prioritizing practical language use in real-life contexts. Despite its growing popularity in Western countries, the application of CLT principles in Asian educational settings has encountered significant obstacles. This study aims to explore three key objectives: (1) to find out how teachers interpret and understand CLT; (2) to find out teachers’ classroom practices and activities when implementing CLT; and (3) to find out what issues and difficulties do teachers encounter with the implementation of CLT in teaching Speaking and Writing. Through qualitative analysis, the findings reveal that while most teachers exhibit positive attitudes and familiarity with CLT, some lack a clear understanding of its principles. The study highlights that teachers effectively utilize interactive activities, such as role plays and group discussions, to create a supportive learning environment. However, challenges persist, particularly in writing instruction, where issues such as limited student interest and background knowledge in grammar hinder effective implementation. In speaking, challenges include learners' language backgrounds and competency levels. The research underscores the importance of addressing these challenges to fully realize the benefits of CLT in the classroom. Ultimately, the study advocates for further exploration of CLT's potential in the Philippine educational context to enhance its effectiveness and advantages in language teaching. |
