| Abstract: |
Drug- drug interactions are one of the reasons for adverse drug events and should be predicted to avoid the possibility of drug resistance or ineffectiveness of the concomitantly administered drugs. There are indications that clarithromycin interfere with cytochrome P-450 enzyme and thereby alter the pharmacokinetics of various drugs that are metabolized by this enzyme system when they are used concomitantly. Hence, keeping the possibility of interactions between clarithromycin and sulfonylurea’s (Glipizide & Gliclazide) in view, the present study is planned with the following objectives:
1. To study the influence of clarithromycin on the blood glucose levels in rats.
2. To study the influence of repeated administration of clarithromycin on the hypoglycemic activity of sulfonylurea’s (Glipizide & Gliclazide) in normal rats.
3. To study the influence of repeated administration of clarithromycin on the anti diabetic activity of sulfonylurea’s (Glipizide & Gliclazide) in experimentally alloxan induced diabetic rats
