| Abstract: |
This study investigates the occurrence and pathogenicity of Aspergillus species in peanuts (Arachis hypogaea) retailed in selected markets of Dologon, Maramag, Bukidnon, Philippines. Peanuts are a vital crop in the region, contributing significantly to local livelihoods and the regional economy. However, they are susceptible to Aspergillus contamination, particularly by A. flavus, which produces carcinogenic aflatoxins. The research aims to isolate Aspergillus spp. from peanut samples, determine their prevalence, and identify factors influencing their occurrence. The study employs quantitative experimental design, focusing on isolating and identifying Aspergillus strains using techniques such as culturing on Potato Dextrose Agar plates. The findings of this research will contribute to understanding the extent of fungal contamination in local peanut supplies, informing strategies to mitigate health risks associated with aflatoxin exposure. Additionally, it will provide insights into improving agricultural practices for safer food production, addressing economic losses due to reduced seed quality and marketability. |
