Abstract: This study explores the strategic role of the mother tongue (L1) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms for young learners, challenging the traditional view that English-only instruction is the most effective method. The research draws on sociocultural, cognitive, and interlanguage theories to highlight how controlled L1 use can facilitate comprehension, reduce learner anxiety, and increase student confidence. Data were collected through surveys and interviews with 120 students aged 5–10, 40 parents, and 10 teachers at primary schools in Vietnam. The findings reveal strong support for the judicious use of L1 as a scaffolding tool, particularly in grammar instruction, classroom management, and vocabulary acquisition. Practical classroom strategies—such as bilingual story mapping, contrastive grammar boards, and code-switch dialogues—are suggested to help integrate L1 use effectively. The study concludes that when applied thoughtfully, the mother tongue can serve as a valuable pedagogical asset, enhancing both the linguistic and emotional development of young learners in EFL settings.
