Abstract
Research Area: Education
KeyWord: Mental health outcomes, social media addiction
Abstract: This study examined the relationship between social media addiction and mental health outcomes among teacher education students. This study employed a descriptive-correlational research design. This was conducted at the Philippine College Foundation particularly the School of Education. Third-year students were the participants, selected using total enumeration sampling. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the level of mental health outcomes and social media addiction. Pearson correlation was utilized to determine the relationship of two variables with consideration to the normality of data. It was found that students were addicted to social media as manifested in time spent in social media, intensity engagement, and disruption of daily activities. Moreover, students’ level of mental health outcomes is poor in relation to their perceived symptoms of distress, poor interpersonal relations, and social role. The findings showed that there is a significant relationship between the level of social media addiction and the level of mental health outcomes among students. The result indicates that the more students engage in social media, the higher the potential risk effect on their mental health outcomes.
